Eurasian Pygmy Owl: In winter
The Eurasian Pygmy Owl is a resident that remains in the coniferous forest all winter.
- Location: it rarely moves far, but may move down to lower altitudes and somewhat further south when the snow lies deep.
- Winter store: as early as autumn it stores dead tits, mice and voles in holes and under bark flakes, sometimes 30–50 prey items, as provisions.
- Activity: unlike many owls, it hunts at dusk and dawn and is often seen even in the middle of the day.
The autumn call in September–October is used to establish territory ahead of the winter and is the best time to locate the species.
