Eurasian Sparrowhawk: Nest & eggs

The Eurasian Sparrowhawk builds its own stick nest and prefers dense, sheltered forest.

• Nest site: a new stick nest is built each year, usually in a spruce at a height of 8–15 metres, where the branchwork provides cover and shade.
• Roles: the female incubates the usually 4–6 eggs for just over a month while the male hunts and provides her with food.
• Protection: the concealed position in conifers protects both eggs and young from crows and other birds of prey.

Since a fresh nest is built each season, the pair readily seeks out the same densely grown stretch of forest year after year.
