European Greenfinch: In winter
The European Greenfinch is mainly a resident and one of the very commonest bird-feeder visitors in winter.
- Food: sunflower seeds and other oil-rich seeds; readily gathers in flocks at feeders.
- Health risk: at feeders the parasite Trichomonas gallinae can spread - clean feeders and bird baths regularly and pause feeding if you see sick birds.
- Movement: northern birds may head south, but many stay near the breeding site.
