The Pied Flycatcher is a cavity nester that readily takes nest boxes with an entrance hole of around 32 mm, but it also uses natural tree holes and woodpecker holes. The nest is built by the female of leaves, bark and grass. She normally lays 6–7 pale blue-green eggs, which she incubates for about 13–15 days. The young are fed by both parents and fledge after about 14–17 days. The species is known for males sometimes being polygynous, defending two separate territories at the same time.
