European Pied Flycatcher: Nest & eggs
The Pied Flycatcher is a cavity nester that readily takes nest boxes put up for it, which has made it one of the most studied birds in the world.
- Nest site: nest boxes with an entrance hole of around 32 mm, but also natural tree holes and old woodpecker holes in deciduous and mixed woodland.
- Nest: the female builds the nest of leaves, bark and grass inside the cavity and normally lays 6–7 pale blue-green eggs.
- Breeding: the young are fed by both parents, but males can sometimes be polygynous and defend two separate territories at the same time.
Because the species readily takes nest boxes, it is easy to attract to the garden and the forest with boxes put up for it.
