The Pied Flycatcher is a pronounced long-distance migrant that leaves Sweden entirely during the winter half of the year.
Overwintering: it spends the winter in tropical West Africa, far from the Swedish breeding forests.
Migration: it is one of the earliest long-distance migrants to return, in late April and early May, and leaves the country during late summer and autumn.
Absence: it is not seen in Sweden in winter — the bird's contrasting plumage and energetic pursuit of insects belong entirely to the summer half of the year.
