Long-eared Owl: Nest & eggs

The Long-eared Owl builds no nest of its own but takes over old nests that other birds have left.

• Nest site: old nests left by crows, magpies or other birds, preferably in a stand of conifers or a screen of woodland near open hunting ground.
• Material: it rarely adds anything of its own but uses the existing stick basket as it is.
• Breeding: usually 3–6 eggs are laid in the borrowed nest and incubated for 27–28 days, and clutch size is governed by the supply of voles.

The young leave the nest before they can fly and clamber around in the branches as so-called branch young.
