The male's song is a muffled, monotonous and long-drawn "huuuh ... huuuh ... huuuh", with the notes repeated at intervals of a few seconds. The song is heard above all in spring, from March to May. Very characteristic are the young's begging calls during July and August, a squeaking, plaintive sound often likened to a rusty gate or a creaking door.
