The Red Kite is a partial short-distance migrant — some birds leave the country while others overwinter.
Staying: some individuals overwinter in southern Sweden, above all in Skåne.
Gathering at feeding sites: at certain places where kites are fed in winter, many birds can be seen at once, something that has contributed to the species' recovery.
Winter food: carrion makes up a large part of the diet, and the birds soar low and watchful over fields and roads in search of animals killed by traffic.
The overwintering birds make the Red Kite one of the few large raptors seen soaring over the fields of Skåne in the middle of winter.
