Rock Dove (Feral Pigeon): Nest & eggs
The Feral Pigeon breeds on cliff-like structures in built-up areas, a direct equivalent of the Rock Dove's natural cliff ledges.
- Nest site: sheltered cliff-like ledges on buildings — roof beams, window ledges, bridge arches, ventilation openings and niches in masonry.
- The nest: a simple and sparse platform of twigs and straw, often reused brood after brood.
- Season: with 2 white eggs per clutch and several broods spread out, the species can breed for much of the year in a mild urban climate.
The availability of dry, sheltered cavities in buildings is an important reason why the Feral Pigeon can maintain such dense populations in cities.
