Rock Dove (Feral Pigeon): In winter

The Feral Pigeon is a pronounced resident and stays in the same urban environment all winter.

  • Place: it rarely moves beyond the block and seeks shelter on rooftops, in lofts, under bridges and in warm building cavities.
  • Food: it gets through the winter on human food scraps, grain and bread remains, and is therefore less weather-sensitive than wild species.
  • Breeding: in mild urban climates the odd pair may even breed during the winter months.

Unlike migratory relatives such as the Stock Dove, the Feral Pigeon is present in the townscape all year round.
