The diet consists of insects, spiders and spruce seeds. The Coal Tit is known for storing large quantities of seeds in bark crevices, among needles and in lichens ahead of winter, a behaviour that helps it survive the cold season. It often forages high up in the spruce tops and readily hangs among the clusters of needles as it searches for insects and seeds.
