The Coal Tit is a cavity nester that does not excavate the nest itself but uses ready-made cavities, often very low down or even in the ground.
Nest site: narrow tree holes and stump cavities in coniferous forest, nest boxes and not infrequently abandoned mouse and vole holes in the ground or among roots.
Builder: the female builds the nest and lines it with moss, animal hair and feathers.
Height: often close to the ground, which sets the Coal Tit apart from several other tits.
This small tit is an adaptable cavity nester that takes what the forest offers and can therefore breed in surprising places.
