The Coal Tit is Sweden's smallest tit and therefore has a smaller entrance hole than the Great Tit and Blue Tit. The right hole size determines which species can use the box.

Placement: put the box up in or near coniferous forest, preferably at a woodland edge with spruce or pine — the Coal Tit is strongly tied to conifers and rarely seeks out open gardens without nearby forest.
Hole size: 26–28 mm admits the Coal Tit but keeps out larger competitors such as the Great Tit (32–34 mm).
Put the box up during the winter half of the year, at the latest in February–March, before the breeding season begins.
