The Blackbird is a short-distance migrant with great variation between individuals.
Northern birds: migrate to southern Scandinavia, the British Isles and Western Europe, usually September–November, returning in March–April.
Southern birds: are often residents and hold their territories all year round.
Males tend to stay closer and return earlier than females in order to secure the best territories.
Migration takes place mainly at night, and some Swedish Blackbirds winter as far away as the British Isles before returning to their breeding territory in spring.
