Common Blackbird: In winter

The Blackbird is a partial resident — a large proportion of the Swedish birds overwinter, especially in the south and in built-up areas.

• Who stays: males stay more often than females, and the milder climate of the urban environment means that ever more overwinter in built-up areas.
• Winter food: windfall fruit (apples), lingering berries and, during mild spells, earthworms. It often forages on the ground beneath the bird table.
• Reinforcements: the Swedish wintering population is bolstered by birds from farther north that have moved south.
