Song: a long, improvised medley of whistles, rasps and clicking sounds — individually variable and including learned imitations of other bird species, insects, dogs, mobile phones and vehicles. A single starling may carry a repertoire of 80+ distinct sounds.
Contact call: a drawn-out, falling "cheer" or "shrreeh" — often heard in flight between trees and nest sites.
Alarm: sharp, repeated "chett-chett" at a bird of prey; a hard whirring sound when the flock draws together in a murmuration.
