Common Starling: In winter

Some starlings overwinter in Sweden while the majority migrate south (see Migration).

  • Winter flocks: the remaining birds gather in large flocks that in the evenings can form spectacular, swirling murmurations over reedbeds and towns before settling to roost.
  • Food: spilled grain, scraps and berries; it forages in fields, on lawns and in urban settings.
  • Towns: more and more overwinter in cities and along the coast where the climate is milder.
