Its food consists of seeds, green plant material, berries and acorns, and the Common Wood Pigeon readily exploits agricultural crops such as oilseed rape, cereals and peas. Large flocks on fields can at times cause crop damage. The rich and varied food supply in the modern farmed landscape is an important reason for the species' sharp increase. The Wood Pigeon has a capacious crop in which it stores large quantities of food to digest later, allowing it to graze off a field quickly and then retreat to cover.
