The Common Wood Pigeon's song is a deep, cooing call in a five-syllable pattern, often rendered as "hoo-hroo hroo-hroo-hoo", with a stress that is repeated in series. It is delivered from a perch in a tree and carries far on still spring mornings. The song is heard through much of the breeding season and is one of the most characteristic sounds of parks and woodland edges. When the bird takes off there is also a distinct clattering sound from the wings, and in its display flight the male climbs steeply before gliding down on stiff wings.
