More and more Common Wood Pigeons winter in Sweden, especially in the south and in towns.
Flocks: large flocks forage on fields, stubble and in parks.
Food: cereals, acorns, buds, clover and remaining berries.
Towns: the milder climate and plentiful food of the urban environment mean that more birds stay put.
Bud eating: when the ground is snow-covered the birds switch to grazing buds and green leaves in trees and bushes, which lets them get through periods when seed food is unavailable.
