The Blackcap is for the most part a migrant, but a growing number now stay and overwinter in Sweden.
Overwintering: more and more birds remain, above all in southern Sweden, which is linked to milder winters and the availability of food at bird tables.
Food: in winter it switches from insects to fat, apple and fat balls at bird tables, which is an important reason why more manage to stay.
Behaviour: it often keeps hidden in scrub and breeds near human settlement, where it may turn up at the garden feeder.
