Eurasian Teal: Nest & eggs

The Teal builds its nest on the ground and hides it especially well, since the little duck is easy prey for predators during breeding.

• Site: well hidden in dense grass, sedge or heather near water, often at forest tarns and bog pools with rich waterside vegetation.
• Construction: a shallow scrape on the ground lined with soft down that the female plucks from her own breast.
• Breeding: the female lays 8–11 eggs and incubates them alone for 21–23 days, after which the young are led to the water almost immediately.
