The Redwing nests in birch and mixed woodland and places its cup-shaped nest low in a tree, in a bush or sometimes on the ground. The clutch usually comprises 5–6 eggs, and both parents take part in incubation and in feeding the young. The species often nests in loosely knit groups and can be very noisy when it warns of predators near the nest.
