The food consists in summer largely of earthworms, insects and other small animals picked up on the ground. During autumn and winter berries become an increasingly important food, and flocks are often seen in rowans and at fallen fruit such as apples in gardens and parks. The availability of berries largely governs where the wintering birds stay. During invasion-like winters large flocks of Redwings may appear together with Fieldfares in berry-rich areas, where they jointly exploit the supply of fruit.
