Redwing: In winter
The Redwing is a northern thrush that migrates south, but some birds overwinter in southern Sweden in mild years.
- Migration: large flocks pass through the whole country during the autumn migration in September–November, often at night with the thin "siih" call.
- Food: in winter berries become the most important food, and flocks are seen in rowans and at fallen fruit such as apples in gardens.
- Berry dependence: the availability of berries determines where the wintering birds stay, often together with Fieldfares.
The species is therefore best seen during the autumn migration, while only a smaller proportion remains in the south over the winter.
