Eurasian Blue Tit: Nest boxes

The key to a Blue Tit box is a small entrance hole, 26–28 mm. This is the most important difference from the Great Tit box (32–34 mm) — the smaller hole keeps out the larger and more dominant Great Tit.

  • Put the box up in February–March, before the pairs choose their territories.
  • Avoid a south- or west-facing position — excess sun and driving rain harm the brood.
  • Clear out old nest material in late autumn to reduce parasites.
