Eurasian Bullfinch: In winter

In winter the Eurasian Bullfinch is one of the most eye-catching garden birds — the bright red male glows against the snow.

  • Food: rowan berries, rosehips, hawthorn and lingering apples; it eats the seed kernel and leaves husk remains beneath the trees.
  • Company: usually seen in pairs or small groups that keep in touch with the soft "dew" call.
  • Reinforcement: the population is boosted by northern birds moving south (see Migration).
