The Eurasian Magpie builds a large, unmistakable nest of twigs, usually roofed over with a dome of branches, high up in a spruce or a broadleaved tree. The clutch is normally 5–7 eggs. Magpies are often faithful to their territory and may use the same nest tree, or build a new one nearby, for several years running. The domed roof of branches protects the nest from crows and birds of prey that would otherwise plunder it, and the female incubates alone while the male defends the territory and brings food. Magpies live in lifelong pairs and establish their territory early in spring.
