The Eurasian Magpie is an omnivore. Its diet includes insects, earthworms, seeds, berries and fruit, but also the eggs and chicks of other birds, as well as refuse and carrion. It finds much of its food by walking about on the ground. The magpie is considered one of the most intelligent of all birds and is one of the few animal species shown to be able to recognise itself in a mirror. Its broad diet and its knack for exploiting human refuse go a long way to explaining why the magpie thrives so well in towns and built-up areas.
