Eurasian Magpie: Nest & eggs

The Eurasian Magpie builds one of the most conspicuous nests of all our birds.

  • Shape: a large domed ball of twigs with a characteristic roof of branches and an entrance on the side, which protects against crows and birds of prey.
  • Location: high in a spruce or a broadleaved tree; the same nest tree, or a new one nearby, is often used for several years in a row.
  • Clutch: 5–7 eggs. The species does not use nest boxes.
