Eurasian Nuthatch: Migration

The Eurasian Nuthatch is one of Sweden's most sedentary birds.

  • No migration: it essentially never leaves its territory, staying in the same place all its life.
  • Juvenile dispersal: young birds make short movements in the autumn to find territories of their own.

Ringed nuthatches are almost always recovered close to where they were ringed, often year after year in the same copse. This makes the species sensitive to the felling of older broadleaf woodland, since it rarely colonises new areas far away.
