The Eurasian Nuthatch is a cavity nester that takes ready-made holes but adapts them itself.
Nest site: old woodpecker holes, natural tree holes and nest boxes in older broadleaf trees.
Plastering: if the entrance is too large the bird plasters it up with mud until the hole fits exactly — a unique behaviour that shuts out larger competitors.
Lining: the nest is lined with thin flakes of bark and dry leaves. The female lays 6–9 eggs.
