The Osprey lives almost exclusively on fish, which make up around 95 percent of its diet. Common prey are pike, perch, bream and roach. The bird watches from a height of about 10–40 metres, often hovers on the spot and then plunges feet-first, sometimes completely below the water surface. A reversible outer toe and spiny footpads enable it to grip slippery fish with two talons forward and two back.
