Osprey: In winter
The Osprey is a true long-distance migrant that does not remain in Sweden during the winter.
- Wintering: the Swedish birds migrate to Africa south of the Sahara and also to southern Europe.
- Absence: the species is away from late summer/autumn until April–May, when the lakes become ice-free again and fishing is possible.
- Summer visitor: it is best seen from May to August at fish-rich lakes such as Hornborgasjön, Tåkern, Mälaren and Vänern.
Since the Osprey is entirely dependent on open, fish-bearing water, the southward winter migration is a necessity.
