The European Goldfinch is instantly recognisable with its unique three-colour pattern in red, black and white and the golden-yellow wing bars.
Male - Face: glowing red from the bill to the eyes. - Head: black-and-white pattern — white forehead and cheeks framed by a black crown and nape. - Back: yellow-brown to beige. - Wings: black with a broad yellow band — clearly visible in flight. - Rump: white. - Tail: forked, black with white tips.
Female The female is almost identical to the male but with a slightly narrower red face patch — sexing requires careful examination at close range.
Juvenile Juveniles lack the red face (beige-brown head with a mottled pattern). The yellow wing bar is already present. They moult into adult plumage after the autumn moult.
