The European Goldfinch is a partial migrant — some stay, others move south.
Flocks: overwintering birds move about in roving flocks; the English name for a flock of goldfinches, "a charm", captures their tinkling chatter.
Food: lingering seeds of thistles, burdocks and dandelions along field edges and on waste ground; at the bird table it takes Niger seeds and sunflower seeds.
Towns: more and more overwinter in gardens with seed feeders.
