House Sparrow: Male & female
In the House Sparrow the sexes differ clearly - unlike the Eurasian Tree Sparrow, where the sexes look alike.
- Male: grey crown, red-brown nape, a black bib that spreads across the breast, and grey underparts.
- Female and immature: plainly streaked brown without a bib, but with a distinct pale eyebrow stripe.
The male's black bib also grows during the breeding season and acts as a status signal towards other males.
