The House Sparrow is talkative and is often heard from hedges and rooftops. Its most common call is an insistent, chattering "cheep-cheep". The "song" is not much more than a monotonous, grating series of the same chattering calls. The sound of a colony is a constant murmur of twittering birds. There is thus no real song to speak of, but the insistent chatter is among the most familiar sounds around houses, farmyards and older parts of town.
