European Robin: In winter

The European Robin is a partial resident — some overwinter in milder locations in the south.

  • Winter territory: unusually, both males and females defend a territory of their own in winter, and the species therefore sings even during the cold season.
  • Food: berries, seeds and insects in bark crevices; it happily visits the bird table and takes mealworms, suet and finely crushed food.
  • Reinforcements: wintering birds in southern Sweden may be northern individuals that have moved down.
